You’ve gotta love it when a publisher gets upstaged on their big day, and we suppose this is the universe’s revenge on Nintendo for dropping the OG Switch on the same day that Horizon: Zero Dawn released. So, the iconic game maker and Universal Pictures assumed they’d have a day full of discourse about The Super Mario Galaxy Movie on their hands — fans happy that the game maker decided to adapt one of the best platformers in the franchise, nerds mad that Brie Larson was doing a voiceover in it, most other folks wondering where the hell Yoshi was — and they even scheduled time to have a full-on Nintendo Direct, which is a YouTube showcase usually reserved for the company’s games, on Wednesday morning. However, when a.m. turned to p.m., Valve — the only video game maker with perhaps more cultish fervor from its fanbase than Nintendo nerds — announced that it was getting back into the console market and would drop a new PC/console and VR headset in 2026. Whoops!
Sorry, guys. Y’all are gonna have to do better than Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr. to get people talking now. But at least you’ve still got this cool trailer, huh? Huh?
Peep it:
And if you really want to go whole-hog, here’s the entire Nintendo Direct from this morning:
Here’s a synopsis for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie:
“There’s no synopsis.”
Huh?
“Yeah. You’re telling me audiences need a copywriter to put out a hundred words of Lorem Ipsum filler to get them to see a Mario movie? Psh.”
Well, that’s not very nice. Anyhow, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will hit theaters on April 3, where it will presumably make a billion dollars and delight nerds and children of all stripes. Meanwhile, we really do want to play that new Mario Kart game, but we’re partial to our kidneys, so there’s no $500 Switch 2 in our future.
