Editor’s Note: Welcome to V3 Weekend, Vanyaland‘s guide to help you sort out your weekend entertainment with curated selections and recommendations across our three pillars of Music, Comedy, and Film/TV. It’s what you should know about, where you need to be, and where you’ll be going, with us riding shotgun along the way.
Music: King Princess at House of Blues
Here’s some quality weekend action in full bloom: Halloween tonight, a Halloween bangover all day tomorrow with takeout and movies, and then some good old-fashioned Girl Violence on Sunday. That last bit is provided by our gal King Princess, who swoops into Boston’s House of Blues to show off her September album. “Girl violence is very sneaky,” says the Brooklyn-based vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer and actor born Mikaela Straus. “It’s not physical, it’s deeply emotional, spiritual, and spooky. Women are both amazing and sinister — including myself — and it’s my curiosity to understand all the love, loss, and changes that come out of my love for women. Why are we so inclined to cause and receive chaos? If you’ve experienced even an iota of it, then you’ll have a story to tell. And these are mine.” Check out new single “Cherry” below, and revisit our summer New Sounds feature on euphoric alt-pop bop “Cry Cry Cry” to get into the mood.
KING PRINCESS + SASAMI :: Sunday, November 2 at House of Blues, 15 Lansdowne St. in Boston, MA :: 7 p.m., all ages, $49.50 to $79.05 :: Event info :: Advance tickets
Comedy: Jordan Klepper at The Wilbur
And now, a word from Mic’d Up: We may be tired of living in unprecedented times, but Jordan Klepper is making his way to the Theatre District this weekend to not only let us know that we aren’t alone, but to also suffer the fools with us in solidarity. Just before we set out our milk and cookies of democracy ahead of Tuesday’s local elections, the Daily Show standout makes his way to Boston for a little bit of commiserating and a healthy amount of the good word at The Wilbur on Sunday as he brings his new show, Suffering Fools, to town. The new stand-up show comes after Klepper has largely served as the fresh face of the iconic Comedy Central show alongside Jon Stewart and a rotation of guest hosts including fellow comedy powerhouses Josh Johnson, Michael Kosta, and Desi Lydic. …In a sea of absolute buffoonery and craziness, Klepper continues to lead a charge of voices using humor and reason to bring levity to an increasingly intense and dour social and political landscape. Here’s to hoping we can all breathe a little better come Sunday night.
JORDAN KLEPPER :: Sunday, November 2 at The Wilbur Theatre, 246 Tremont St. in Boston, MA :: 6 p.m., $55 :: Advance tickets
Film/TV: ‘Halloween’ at Coolidge Corner Theatre
Fresh off The Coolidge Corner Theatre’s annual 12-hour Halloween Horror Marathon, we circle back to the Brookline cinema for something so obvious we can’t help but buy in: Halloween on Halloween. The slashing gets started tonight for a Coolidge After Midnite midnight screening the 1978 classic Michael Myers flick, and stabs its way into Saturday night with Rob Zombie’s Halloween II. Here’s a refresher on the OG film as that music starts playing in your head: “Fifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield to kill again. On a cold Halloween night in 1963, six year old Michael Myers brutally murdered his 17-year-old sister, Judith. He was sentenced and locked away for 15 years. But on October 30, 1978, while being transferred for a court date, a 21-year-old Michael Myers steals a car and escapes Smith’s Grove. He returns to his quiet hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois, where he looks for his next victims.” That probably means you.
‘HALLOWEEN‘ :: Friday, October 31 at The Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard St. in Brookline MA :: 11:59 p.m., $17 :: Event page and advance tickets
