Tiberius ‘Sag’ under the weight of comparison on new single

If there were an encyclopedia of Boston music, the “Boston to Brooklyn phenomenon” would have its own section. It’s a tale as old as Great Scott: A band busies themselves around Boston, and when they’re on the precipice of a breakthrough, they cut ties in favor of a New York borough that seems like greener pastures. (See: Guerilla Toss, Model/Actriz, Lake Street Dive, etc.)

Even if a particular act doesn’t pull up stakes, it’s hard not to flirt with the idea of moving. It’s a feeling the members of Tiberius are well-acquainted with, per their new song “Sag.” The blistering spool of alt-rock catches vocalist and guitarist Brendan Wright “aggrandizing self-importance,” thrashing to the sound of their own existential unease.

“Sag” and its accompanying music video arrived last week (July 18) and begin to reveal Tiberius’ label debut album Troubadour, which arrives November 14 via Audio Antihero.

“Sag is about this dreaded ‘Allston to Bushwick’ pipeline we have in Boston,” shared Wright. “A lot of musicians end up using Boston to cut their teeth before heading off to New York or L.A. to pursue their music careers. I wrote ‘Sag’ when I was really playing the ‘comparison game’ in my head and asking myself what role I wanted music to play in my life. It was the first in a batch about looking at yourself in relation to the others around you and trying to decipher who you are without that context.“
