Mic’d Up: Steve Hofstetter keeps it special at The Comedy Studio

Editor’s Note: It’s the same thing we all know in love when it comes to Vanyaland’s recurring weekly live comedy rundown, Mic’d Up — just a slightly different face. We’ll be hyping club shows, theater and arena gigs, open mics, and whatever else to help fill your free time with some much-needed laughter.

While Steve Hofstetter is fully equipped to remind us why heckling at a comedy show is never a good idea, he’s also wielding a skillset that makes it all too easy to sit back and listen with full attention.

On the heels of his new docu-special, Kill The Butterflies, Hofstetter keeps the momentum going with a one-night-only engagement at The Comedy Studio on Wednesday (August 27). While, of course, his online presence could give people unfamiliar with his game the impression that unleashing well-sculpted political hot takes and decimating hecklers is his whole deal, the New York native returns to the area with a fresh batch of hard-hitting joke writing that far exceeds the rigid boundaries of such half-baked labels. Although he does regularly take chunks of his time on stage to tee off on folks who just can’t help but be disruptive, Hofstetter virtually never lets it get so out of hand that he’s not on his game, which makes his shows a playfully dangerous combination of agile and straight to the point.

He’s what the kids might call “a good doobie” as he wields his powers for good (even if he’s a Mets fan), and he also offers a dashingly good time for a night out at the local comedy club. That’s a win-win if we’ve ever seen one.

STEVE HOFSTETTER :: Thursday, August 27, at The Comedy Studio, 5 John F. Kennedy St. in Cambridge, MA :: 7 p.m., $30 to $150 :: Advance tickets
