Editor’s Note: Welcome to V3 Weekend, Vanyaland‘s guide to help you sort out your weekend entertainment with curated selections and recommendations across our three pillars of Music, Comedy, and Film/TV. It’s what you should know about, where you need to be, and where you’ll be going, with us riding shotgun along the way.
Music: Greer at The Sinclair
It’s time for us to turn up. SoCal indie band Greer are currently on tour supporting wonderful March record Big Smile, and just before heading out across our broken land asked folx the following on Insta: “Which city is the best one, comment below.” Lotta fucking votes for the Michigan hotspot of Ferndale in the replies, but very few for Cambridge, for whatever reason. Tonight we get a chance to show what’s up as Greer roll into The Sinclair for some noisy Friday night action in Harvard Square. Let’s fire up “Had Enough” as a pre-game workout to get us all amped up. “Originally inspired by The Eagles’ ‘Chug All Night,’ ‘Had Enough’ serves as a fun pop song about the different struggles pets go through when first meeting their owners,” Greer declare. “Fun fact about this song – after figuring out the bridge, we all simultaneously exclaimed, ‘PIZZA TIME!’ Although this coincidence is not yet explained to us, it’s something we oftentimes remember, forever symbolized as a signifying moment representing our newfound unity as a band.” Y’all know what to do.
GREER + CHINESE AMERICAN BEAR :: Friday, June 13 at The Sinclair, 52 Church St. in Cambridge, MA :: 7 p/m., all ages, $35.42 :: Event info :: Advance tickets
Film/TV: Friday the 13th in the Rocky Woods
We definitely don’t need the calendar to remind us that everything is absolutely terrible, but hey, don’t look now, it’s Friday the 13th! This means the Coolidge Corner Theatre’s After Midnite series is back to lure horror fans into the Rocky Woods to celebrate the iconic slasher film franchise with another machete-raising double feature. With everything else going on, we welcome falling victim to Jason Voorhees all over again. Tonight the Coolidge teams up with Medfield’s Rocky Woods to present a scream-worthy double-feature outdoors and far from the city, screening Friday the 13th (1980) and Friday the 13th (2009) in a campground setting. They’ll also be playing The F13th Fan Film Mixtape from the American Genre Film Archive! Will Jason be lurking behind the big screen? Roll up to find out. Just don’t try to get freaky during the film; you know what happens.
FRIDAY THE 13TH IN THE ROCKY WOODS :: Friday, June 13 at the Rocky Woods Reservation, 38 Hartford St. in Medfield, MA :: 8 p.m., $35, parking is extra :: Coolidge event info and ticket page
Film/TV: ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ at The Brattle
Anyone who reads Vanyaland on the reg knows we enjoy some good thematic programming, and this weekend The Brattle posts up for all the dads out there with a Saturday and Sunday night shot of The Empire Strikes Back, which we’re all feeling pretty good about after Andor’s season two rekindled our love for the franchise. Here’s the word from the Cambridge cinema: “Celebrate Father’s Day with one of the all-time bad dads (spoiler alert, I guess?): Darth Vader. Arguably better — though not more beloved — than the first film in the franchise, this sequel to Star Wars solidifies the Resistance against the Empire and introduces us to new environments — most notably the ice planet Hoth, where the rebels have holed up after taking down the Death Star, and Bespin Cloud City, where the charming rogue Lando Calrissian (Williams) holds sway.” Check out the OG trailer for the iconic film below, and please take us back to 1980, thanks.
‘THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK’ :: Saturday, June 14 and Sunday, June 15 at The Brattle, 40 Brattle St. in Cambridge, MA :: 9 p.m., $15 :: Advance tickets and info
