We’re a bit sad that Vanyaland’s own personal Wet Leg week — an early March swing that delivered a feature on “Angelica”; a proper This Show Is Tonight plug; and a live review of the duo’s Boston appearance — has come to an end. But really every week is a week for Wet Leg, especially this one, as the Isle of Wight twosome of Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers today (April 4) release a new single in “Ur Mum” that’s the latest from this Friday’s very highly anticipated self-titled debut album.
Teasdale says this new track, something swirling in a casual storm of indie-pop and post-punk, is inspired by an ex-boyfriend. “I was pretty angry at the way things had gone in this particular dynamic,” she says. “It’s just a diss song I wrote to make myself feel better. It worked.” It also includes a primal scream unleashed by Teasdale — her “longest and loudest scream” — that clocks in at an impressive 11.2 seconds.
That might be the most defining thing put to tape in 2022.
“Ur Mum” (lol) also comes with a music video directed by Lava La Rue who has this to say: “The ‘Ur Mum’ video was all about bringing the viewer into the Wet Leg world — sprinkling details throughout the visual that not only reference at least four songs off the album but also plenty of inside jokes within the band, too. Artistically it shows where the aesthetic of American indie films like Napoleon Dynamite fit perfectly in the scape of rural British settings — this concept first came to me when the band took me to IOW for the first time — I saw the connection and it all clicked into place.”
Scream along, sing along, ride along, below.
